Backstage Pre-Performance Warmup Exercises | Injury Prevention for Musicians
Просмотров 2252 месяца назад
Here are some fantastic backstage exercises I like to do before a concert. These are also great to do right before practicing, a rehearsal, or during an intermission. The goal is to warm up the body and the mind, which is our "true primary instrument"...the instrument you play is actually "secondary" - The way we breathe, the way we move, and the way we hear the music in our inner ear in the pr...

2 Categories of Goal-Setting in Practice
Просмотров 1783 месяца назад
There is no single right or wrong way to set a goal. Most goals fall into one of two categories: specific and open-ended. It's similar to considering outcome-based vs process-based, but with some more nuance. This is a concept I got from The Growth Equation and adapted specifically toward classical musicians in this short video. However, this is applicable to all disciplines. Anyone watching th...
Kreutzer 1 Dynamics with Unilateral & Bilateral Motion | Play With a More Resonant Sound
Просмотров 5474 месяца назад
Unilateral motion is when the body transfers weight toward the same direction as the bow. It helps to extend the legato stroke and encourages the upper arm to lead in very slow bows. Bilateral motion is when the bow moves in the opposite direction of the body’s weight transfer. It’s helpful for most other types of bow strokes. Even in fast 16th note passages, the body responds on a more “micros...
How To Catch the String with Arm Weight, NOT Force | Martele and Colle | Paul Rolland Bow Rocking
Просмотров 7925 месяцев назад
One common pitfall of learning "catch and release" for a good martele, colle, and other related bowstrokes is pushing too hard with the index finger or overpronating the arm. This can lead to a lot of tension. A better way is to feel the natural weight of the arm into the bow, and the bow's natural weight making contact with the string. A great tool to feel the natural arm weight more easily is...

Double Stops to Single Stops String Crossing | Double Stops for Beginners, Intermediate
I have a question, if I play a major 3rd with C and the open E string, would that 3rd be in just intonation or in equal temp? Because the same 3rd played an octave lower (the one of the Bach Andante), you say it must be a pure major 3rd to be harmonically in tune, but wouldn't that E be a little lower compared to the open E string? For example if I have to play a scale of 3rds (C major), which of the two 3rds would be most appropriate? Sorry if I’m confused
You are correct! I actually talk about this exact problem in Bach Andante in part 2 of this topic, with repertoire examples (should be linked in description box somewhere). It's not possible to play this Bach opening "100% in tune" and different players interpret what sounds best, where there is more than one compromise that's possible - this is where intonation actually becomes subjective!
Thanks for the answer! I think I’m going to stick with equal temp :)
Nice video - thank you :).
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Always so helpful to hear insider secrets! This makes a lot of sense.
Thank you April!
This is really excellent advise on how to practice as well as what to practice. A good strategy makes practice time so much more efficient, creative and fun. Thank you very much for sharing your insights.
You're very welcome! And you are so right! Thank you for watching and your thoughtful comment!
In Bach sonata, why don't you try to adjust root C to match E and F? :) I though the general point was to keep main melody equally tempered and bend harmonic voices to make perfect intervals?
That's because the root is the foundation of the harmony, and that's also the key of the movement. Adjusting it will make the whole thing really out of tune, especially as the lower voice changes. Imagine if the foundation of a building shifted.
Thanks so much for the tips playing tenth , finally I got it now , you’re so right and you explained it very clearly ❤😊you deserve so much appreciation as a violinist and a mentor 🙏😇
You're very welcome - So glad it was helpful! And thank you for the kind words!

Great lesson - thank you - but check your heart re your shortness of breath
hi! what is this transparent 'thing' you put after the bridge? is it a mute?
Yes - actually it's a thick straw! Works quite well for a slide-on mute.
Thanks so much, Inna, for sharing these valuable hand shapes patterns information with us!❤😊

So they make clickbait books too nowadays? Cool.
Last I checked, clickbait book titles existed before the internet ;) Keep an open mind
It’s great if you focus the camera , intermittently, to your finger tips as well.
Good idea! I'll keep that in mind for future videos =)
This video is great, as it has certainly had made a difference in improving my string crossing (smoothly). Thank you for the wonderful examples and demonstrations.👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Great to hear it's helping your string crossing already! Thank you for watching & commenting!
Thanks for the video. Anyone knows what the m3 and so on symbols above each measure of the preparation shifting exercises mean?
it specifies the measure number of whatever the preparation exercise refers to. So for example, in the Key of A, it says m. 3 in the first shifting exercise. it refers to the 3rd measure of page 10 (Foundation Key of A)

Thank you very much😍 Your lessons do encourage me to practice. It will be a long way though.😊
Best of luck!
Hi from Argentina! Is there a book, video, something that I could learn those exercises? Because I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and i suffer from pain in muscles, etc. And i'm having a hard time to study violin, sadly :"(, and worse because i have zero money to go to have a massage, for example. I'd be so thankful if you can give me a hand.
HI, I cannot help with a medical condition - am not a doctor. The Paul Rolland book is linked in the description of this video if you're curious.
❤❤❤❤ great ❤❤❤❤
100% in tune? Do you think that exists? Do you have a referency of the best musical temperament instead to repeat the same unusual things?
Do you use perfect fifths when you tune your violin?
It's all wrong! Only historical facts... All the notes must to have constant place like the A440Hz. Only the unisson must be perfect. All others intervals we must avoid to be in just intonation. Yes, the octave also! 12ET is the best way, but only without a just octave! We need a true reference how to stay in tune, an universal temperament! Nobody today ne propose different mesures for time or distance, stop please to lead people in wrong way!
Thanks
Thank you very much for watching and for your generous contribution to the channel!
Thanks
Thank you so much for the super thanks! New videos coming soon =)
Thanks. I see some instructors suspending the bow hair above and off the string in order to deliver a colle derived motion called the brush stroke as you mention. But you start on the string and dont rely on a primarily finger extension and retraction.
Any finger motion is passive in true spiccato stroke, and the forearm leads. Finger motion is more visible in some players than others and it's really a reaction as part of the momentum. However, an exercise, it's often recommended to practice developing the flexibility and strength of the fingers by doing colle bowstroke. In colle (which is different from spiccato, but not unrelated) the fingers participate more. It also starts on the string.
You’re a doll! Thank you for the very clear explanation
You are so welcome!
you are a blessing and an inspiration.....I readily admire all your videos....thank you so much!
Thank you for the kind words! Glad you enjoy them :)

Chords could be a great support
Very important to know the intervals, I believe... Best is to build them yourself...
Inna, Wow, these are really tough for my 73 year old fingers. I didn’t know how weak they are. I hope this strengthens them. Thank you for your help.
best wishes!!
